ICOS 2008 Conference Abstract

Presentation of Saami Place Names on Swedish Maps during the Last 100 Years

Author(s):
L Dehlin
National Land Survey of Sweden, Sweden

The paper is a critical view of the process of standardizing Saami place names in Sweden. Special attention is paid to the names on the official maps and the linguistic examination that precedes the publication of these maps. The starting-point of my paper is the Saami place names that were first published on the ordnance maps at the end of the 19th century, from the year of 1895 and onwards. I will also describe the linguistic examination regarding the publication of the later topographical and economic maps in the 1950’s and 1960’s and forward. In conclusion, I will mention the latest maps from the 21st century that present the Saami place names in their different varieties: North, Lule, Ume and South Saami. I will also talk about the present standardizing work which includes a newly established co-operation between the National Land Survey, The Institute for Language and Folklore and the Saami Parliament.
