ICOS 2008 Conference Abstract

The Identification of Women in the old Volynia

Author(s):
I Huk-Mytnik
Department of Ukranian Philology, Poland

The development of the anthroponomy of women in the area of old Volyn (from the 16th to the 17th century) was connected with the social and cultural conditions. The use of linguistic means to identify women was diversified and dependent on the women’s marital status and, to a small extent, on belonging to a particular social class. There were patronymic and marytonymic appellations, which expressed a (structured) dependence relationship with father and husband.
Concerning the ways of women’s identifying women, there were no strictly established formulae for the naming patterns. First of all, they were attributable to social membership and, in the case of noblewomen, additionally on the type of source documents.
